A Note from Lynne Armstrong

Dear True Gem Community,

After nearly ten years, my chapter with The True Gem is coming to a close. The company will continue beyond my time here in the hands of my partners and our team.

My relationship with this community has always been rooted in connection and a shared willingness to be vulnerable. Over the last several years, I learned more than I expected about what I am capable of, what I need, and what I can no longer ask of myself. That clarity is part of why I am leaving.

For most of my life, I believed grit and determination were my greatest allies. I built a company on that belief, and for years I measured my strength by how much I could endure. I knew how to persevere, but I did not yet understand the cost of over functioning. I had mistaken self-abandonment for devotion.

I recognize now that many of the beliefs I lived by were shaped by a larger cultural story. One that teaches some of us to treat our own needs as negotiable in service of the invisible labor that holds families, workplaces, and communities together, then praises that self-sacrifice as virtue.

Stepping away from the company earlier this year gave me something I had not had in decades: enough distance to recognize the constant calculation running in the background of my mind.

How much energy do I have left today? What is already spoken for? What will this next demand cost me? What will I have to borrow from tomorrow to pay for it?

Every unplanned demand was weighed against a number that was already too tight, and with each one, my chronic illness found a louder voice. The equation never balanced because I had built it wrong from the beginning. I treated every need outside myself as fixed and myself as the only variable allowed to give.

My body absorbed the difference until it finally refused the terms of the equation. The future I believed I was building was consuming the life I needed to reach it.

I called that discipline and believed it was honorable. What I understand now is that I was living by an inherited measure of worth, one that taught me how to become a good producer long before I learned how to become a whole person.

I was always pursuing a larger idea of beauty. Gemstones and precious metals were only one expression of it. To me, beauty is truth made visible. A ring makes a promise tangible; a company reveals its values in the relationships it builds.

For me, putting that belief into practice meant creating jobs people could like themselves for and building a place where the best in people was noticed rather than overlooked. I hoped that goodness would ripple far beyond our walls.

The Ambassador Program embodied that hope. It showed that what we cultivated here was never merely transactional. I will always treasure the relationships it made possible.

I am deeply proud of the art we made, the community that formed around it, and the many livelihoods that work sustained. I am grateful for the trust people placed in us during some of the most significant moments of their lives.

The True Gem’s future will be shaped by the people who continue the work and by this community, which has always brought it to life. There is more beauty to be made together.

To everyone who gave these years their meaning, thank you. I will always value the ways they shaped me. For now, I am ready to rest and allow whatever comes next to unfold in its own time.
